Meeting Our Inner Child

Our Inner child still remembers the trauma, disappointment, hurt, rejection, false accusations and misunderstandings of the past.

He/she still feels angry about the injustice of it all. The turmoil in our soul, left behind by these incidents attempts to get our attention.

They manifest in us through judgmentalism, criticism, irritability, anxiety, psychosomatic illnesses, self-sabotage, low self-esteem, panic attacks, depression and bouts of anger.

They cause addictions, eating disorders, irrational fears and self-imposed isolation. Collectively, we spend millions on counseling and medication to escape these unwanted feelings.

Our behavior is brought on by our Inner Child, who is attempting to self-medicate, as well as to gain both our Inner Adult’s and Inner Parent’s attention for help in resolving these unsettled issues.

The trauma and unresolved issues of our past will cause our Inner Child to stand in the way of our walking in God’s Spirit.

Connecting to our Inner Child is the best way to stop this disabling behavior. As we address these issues, which affected us as a child, we find inner peace through God’s Holy Spirit.

By setting aside a block of quiet time and relaxing in a comfortable position, we can clear our mind of current issues, to make room for the past issues, which will surface.

You may even want to play some relaxing music to help with concentration, or grab the photo album from your childhood to help you connect to your Inner Child within.

The photo that stands out to you the most will give you a clue as to where you are stuck in your past. Take your Inner Child by the hand and offer to walk together through life.

Give that Inner Child your undivided attention and your nurturing love. Journal and allow your Inner Child to unburden the wounds from your past.

Take them seriously and make amends in any way you can. Offer to parent your Inner Child by teaching your Inner Parent to nurture and love your Inner Child.

Prayer:
Father God, as we enable our Inner Child to revisit our childhood memories and to express times of trauma, minister by Your Spirit to our entire spirit, soul and body. Enable us to release the negative emotions we hung onto all of these years.

Help us to forgive those who inflicted these painful wounds and to leave them in Your capable hands to judge them. Help us to enjoy each moment of our day as we walk in Your Spirit (Galatians 5:15-25).

Thought for the Day:
Even if these childhood memories seem small as an adult, validate your Inner Child’s feelings and memories and give him/her permission to heal.
